Becoming one of Europe’s most popular capital cities, Budapest is that city everyone should have on their bucket list. Although it is widely known for its partying and cheap booze, Hungary’s capital is grand and majestic, with beautiful historical buildings (the highlight being the Parliament) and their well known thermal baths. I recommend you don’t skip the ruin bars (just for the experience) and a Danube cruise at sunset. Ljubljana is definitely a hidden gem, with cosy riverside cafés, a charismatic old town and perfect for a day trip to Lake Bled. Slightly away from Europe there’s Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt’s most popular resort destination. It is considered one of the region’s best winter sun destination due to its beautiful beaches blended with the desert, although personally the highlight is the colourful coral reefs, perfect for snorkelling in crystal-clear waters.
Similarly, Montego Bay offers a tropical laid-back trip. It boasts incredible beaches and waterfalls, plus a unique insight into reggae culture and Caribbean food. Lastly, Asunción – my personal favourite. Paraguay’s capital is much smaller compared to those in bordering countries. Despite this, it still offers an insight into local culture, although I admit the historic centre hasn’t been too taken care of. The reason why I’m highlighting this deal is because it the perfect entry point to the rest of the country: Encarnación is an absolute gem with lots of fascinating history, and the eastern part of the country holds the Iguazú Falls, which you shouldn’t miss. Intercity transport within the country is easy and affordable.
